AI tax research becomes a team problem as soon as someone else has to review the answer. A staff member finds a promising result in ChatGPT. A manager asks which provision supports it. A partner needs to know whether the analysis fits the client’s facts and the right tax year.

The time saved on the first draft matters less if each person has to rebuild the research. A useful firm-wide workflow carries the facts, sources, and open questions from one person to the next.

TaxMCP Team gives each practitioner source-linked research inside their own Claude or ChatGPT account, while the firm manages access and billing. Here is a practical way to make that access useful across the practice.

Agree on what a finished research task contains

Before comparing prompts or choosing a model, decide what staff should hand to a reviewer. A short research packet can contain:

That format gives a manager something concrete to review. It also makes it easier to hand a task to another staff member when workloads change.

Keep the same facts through the handoff

Suppose a client asks about the tax treatment of a business asset sale. Staff researches the transaction as a current-year sale. During review, the manager discovers that part of the payment arrives next year and that the client operates in two states.

The original answer might be well sourced and still address the wrong question. Start with a brief that names the relevant dates, payment terms, entity type, jurisdictions, and missing facts. Have the reviewer approve the scope before staff spends time drafting a conclusion.

Use the same brief when the question moves between people or assistants. Record changes explicitly so the next reviewer can see why the research changed.

For client information, decide which systems the firm has approved and what each may receive. The IRS Office of Professional Responsibility’s 2026 guidance on AI in federal tax practice addresses staff training, secure data handling, and vetting third-party AI tools. Removing identifiers can reduce unnecessary exposure, but the facts still need to be handled under the firm’s data policies.

Give reviewers a source trail

A citation at the end of a paragraph is a starting point for review. Ask staff to connect each important claim to the authority behind it.

What the reviewer needsWhat staff should provide
The rule being appliedExact section or case citation and a source link
The relevant languageA checked quotation or clearly labeled paraphrase
The applicable periodThe tax year and any effective-date issue
The fit to the clientWhich confirmed facts matter to the analysis
The limits of the answerExceptions, contrary authority, and unresolved facts

Open the linked authority and read enough surrounding text to check the claim. A retrieved provision can still be applied incorrectly, and a relevant case can turn on facts that differ from the client’s.

OPR’s guidance also calls for checking AI-generated facts, citations, and calculations before relying on the work. A shared subscription does not change who reviews and signs off on the conclusion.

Our guide to AI tax research memos walks through the same source-checking process for a written deliverable.

Use a common research instruction

Teams can start with one instruction and adapt it to each assignment:

Research the issue below for the stated tax years and jurisdictions. First list confirmed facts, assumptions, and missing facts. Use TaxMCP to retrieve relevant authority with exact citations and source links. For each material claim, show the supporting authority and explain how it applies to the facts. Identify exceptions, contrary authority, and effective-date questions. Label quotations and paraphrases separately. Do not fill gaps with invented facts or citations. Finish with a provisional conclusion and questions for the reviewer.

The instruction defines the handoff. Staff still needs to check the output and follow up when the available sources do not resolve the question.

Keep the completed packet and final memo in the firm’s workpaper system. Colleagues should be able to review the work without needing access to the original AI conversation.

Set up access for each practitioner

With TaxMCP Team, every member has their own TaxMCP account and connects their own supported Claude or ChatGPT account. Team provides the full Pro+ research library, including federal authority, supported state tax codes, and U.S. Tax Court opinions.

The firm manages the parts that change as people join, take on responsibilities, or leave:

Assign billing responsibility and membership administration deliberately. When someone leaves, remove their Team membership and review access to the other systems used in the research workflow. Keep the firm’s research records in its own workpapers.

Start with one real handoff

Choose a familiar research question with a result your team can check. Have a staff member prepare the packet and a manager review it using the same process they would use for client work.

Measure where the time goes. How long does it take to find and open the authority? Which facts does the reviewer have to ask for? Can another practitioner follow the reasoning without repeating the entire search?

Use those observations to improve the brief and review process before extending it across the practice. Search volume can help you understand adoption; the quality of the handoff tells you whether the workflow is helping.

Create your team

TaxMCP Team is $39 per seat monthly or $348 per seat annually, equivalent to $29 per seat per month. The three-seat minimum is $117 monthly or $1,044 annually, before applicable tax or discounts.

To get started:

  1. Sign in to TaxMCP or create an account and verify your email.
  2. Create your team and choose the number of seats and billing interval.
  3. Complete checkout to activate paid access.
  4. Invite colleagues so each person can connect their own supported AI account.

Creating the team alone does not start billing. If the owner already has a paid personal plan, checkout asks whether to replace it with Team or keep it separately.
